Story
We were born out of frustration with the usual judges' critiques - standard generalizations, singing along to the song, or no more than six words, half of which were simply, "cute." Tell me why I didn't get full points. Tell me what you'd like to see different... I paid $$$ to come here, tell me SOMETHING!
BUT, that's not exactly where this journey started, and it's definitely not where our mission ends.
So often, what limits us as dancers and teachers isn't the passion, it's the information. What do we know, what's the reliability of that info, what do we not even realize we are missing?! And if it's not that, because we like to keep it real here at MM, it's the application. Collecting knowledge and tools is pointless without a solid grasp on how to use and deliver all of it in a way that actually works. In this age, there are virtually unlimited resources at your disposal (which we love, by the way) but if you've ever struggled with how to organize and prioritize that information... or been overwhelmed by what you, your dancers, or your program actually needs right now - that's what we are all about!
More than anything, the underlying principle behind every facet of this company is that
the HOW and WHY matter as much as the WHAT
in everything we do. This, along with being open to growth and that the "magic" is in the work you're avoiding, are tenets behind our mission. Sarah and the Movement Mentor Team believe in the power of foundation and fundamentals, and that empathy and humility unlock true progress. When we focus on the process over the product, education is a natural result. Training dancers and teachers is a side effect of what we aim to do. Even though it may be what we talk about most often, our true priority is helping others *confidently* fill their toolbox so they can lead more fulfilling, healthier lives - using our bodies to enrich our hearts and souls. ♥
Hi! I'm Sarah and I founded Movement Mentor
after over 15 years as a dance teacher, coach, and director. I'm gonna let you in on a secret... this is not what I planned to do. I set out to be an Astronaut, I've been an Army Helicopter Mechanic and an Aerospace Engineer, but through it all there was dance & cheer. I never stopped investing my time into training and teaching. One day, I decided to stop treating it like a side-gig, collecting thoughts and methods into notebooks nobody would ever see, and I became a full-time professional in the dance industry. And years of hard work after that, I made another big decision... it would be even better to share those methods, systems, and knowledge in a way that made a greater impact. There is no doubt my background in science and leadership influence the way I teach. We break it down (way down) so that I can help you construct with a deeper awareness so you're even better equipped to go forward on your own. But nothing trumps the fact that I truly, enthusiastically care about every student, every relationship, and want to honor their unique journey. I am incredibly passionate about the process, and the impact that has on the people.
And now we're here! I spend every day learning and sharing as much as I can about training dancers and teachers through workshops, curriculum building, and choreography (oh, and there's the making of costumes and dance photography, too).
